Gimhongsok creates new ‘stories’ from sources that he discovers in society and visualizes them into paintings, sculptures, videos and performances. His work suggests people to look at the subject issue of work with different eyes. Although his translation often looks like an absurd fiction at first glance, it has a cool and serious criticism towards our society.
In this exhibition, the artist presents works that critically deals with communication dilemma and sub-social irregularities in our world. Like the title ‘In through the outdoor’ which has twisted nuance, Gimhongsok’s work often contains sarcastic and tactful humor in it.
Born in Seoul in 1964, Gimhongsok graduated from Dusseldorf Kunst Akademie in Germany after earning his BA in Fine Arts at Seoul National University.
Currently, he teaches at Sangmyung University in the department of Theater Design & Production.
One of the most internationally active artists, Gimhongsok has exhibited world widely in important biennales such as the Venice Biennale, Istanbul Biennial, Tirana Biennale, Valencia Biennale, Echigo Tsumari Triennale, Taipei Biennial and Gwangju Biennale. He was also invited to group shows in renowned art institutions including the Hayward Gallery in London, Kunsthalle Wien in Wien, Mori Museum in Tokyo and Walker Art Center in Minneapolis.
