Introduction
Cecily Brown is a prominent British painter who lives and works in New York City. Born in 1969, she obtained her BTEC Diploma in Art Design from Epsom School of Art, Surrey, England (1985-1987) and studied Fine Arts at Slade School of Art in London (1989-1993). Brown moved to the United States after her graduation in 1994 and had her first two solo exhibitions at Deitch Projects in Soho in 1997 and 1998. Her paintings were met with immediate critical success.
Brown’s work is characterized by a unique combination of figuration and abstraction, expanding the traditional vocabulary of Abstract Expressionism and showing the influence of artists as diverse as Willem de Kooning, Franscisco de Goya, Nicolas Poussin, and Joan Mitchell. She often titles her works after classic Hollywood films such as The Pajama Game, The Bedtime Story and The Fugitive Kind.
Brown paints directly onto the canvas without the use of preparatory drawings, giving a sensual texture and passionate immediacy to her work. Her large works often explore erotic themes and abstracted historical narrative, reflecting her view that these subjects are inseparable from the history of painting.
This can be seen in her strong brush strokes that often evoke the mythic scenes of Renaissance painting.
Kukje Gallery is very happy to be presenting a comprehensive introduction to this provocative and important late Modernist artist, exhibiting 13 paintings and 6 monotypes. The works in the gallery embody Brown’s interest in human desire and love and they exploit their formal ambiguity to force the viewer into a destabilized female perspective as they challenge the viewer to fill in the narrative. In this way they play with the subtle boundary between gendered codes of abstraction and figuration as well as the ways popular culture represents popular themes of fantasy and desire.
Brown’s work has appeared at the Whitney Biennial 2004 in New York, “The Triumph of Painting” at the Saatchi Gallery, London and “Greater New York” at P.S. 1, New York. Her first major museum exhibition in the U.S. was organized by the Des Moines Art Center and travelled to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
Brown has exhibited at galleries and museums around the world including Contemporary Fine Arts in Berlin, MACRO in Rome and Museum der Moderna, Salzburg. Her paintings are in the permanent collections of many important museums and arts institutions including the Tate Modern, the Guggenheim Museum, the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, New York and Des Moines Art Center.
