Kukje Gallery is very pleased to present celebrated Brazilian artist Carlito Carvalhosa in a solo exhibition opening on October 12, 2013. This will be the artist’s first exhibition in Korea.

Known internationally for his ambitious sculptural installations and video, Carvalhosa’s work seeks to transform architectural space and subtly disrupt the viewers’ experience. In so doing he is able to reframe the everyday materiality of our urban landscapes and evoke a poetic feeling of both loss and tranquility. His materials are diverse, ranging from large-scale objects to ephemeral textiles, but what his practice consistently explores is his desire to reframe space and create moments of quiet beauty.

For his first exhibition at Kukje Gallery, Carvalhosa will exhibit a major sculptural installation titled Sala de Espera which means a “waiting room.” This unforgettable work consists of dozens of full-length tree trunks that dramatically cut through the gallery space intersecting its interior architecture. Originally used as posts for street lighting, these objects (ranging from 8-12 meters in length) simultaneously evoke an uncanny lightness and ominous feeling of dead weight. Indeed, it is the interplay between the psychology of a building and its human occupants that is one of Carvalhosa’s central themes. Drawing inspiration from both modernist design vocabularies and the rituals that transform space into a public sphere, the artist’s installations remain ambiguous and defy easy explanation. In addition, his choice of materials often plays with high and low, radically reinterpreting everyday materials - for example the light posts - into powerful signifiers of movement and emotion.

First installed in the in the Oscar Niemeyer designed Museum of Contemporary Art in São Paulo, Sala de Espera is a work that is intimately connected to its site and Kukje Gallery is thrilled to be able to install this groundbreaking work in its gallery K3.


About the Artist
Carlito Carvalhosa was born in São Paulo, Brazil in 1961. He received a degree in architecture at the School of Architecture and Urbanism of the University of São Paulo, in 1984. Caravalhosa has participated in biennials around the world including the International Biennial of São Paulo, the Havana Biennial, the ‘Bienal Brasil Século XX’, the Mercosul Biennial and the 'Côte à Côte Art Contemporain du Brésil' at CAPC in Bordeaux, France. He has staged exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Museu de Arte Moderna, Rio de Janeiro, Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo, the Imperial Palace, Rio de Janeiro; Gabinete de Arte Raquel Arnaud and at Galeria Millan amongst many others.
His installation Sala de Espera was chosen to be the inaugural exhibition in the new Annex at the Museum of Contemporary Art, São Paulo.

국제갤러리는 오는 10월 12일부터 브라질 출신의 설치 작가 칼리토 카르발료사의 개인전을 개최한다. 이번 개인전은 칼리토의 첫 번째 한국전시이자 3관 공간 전체를 탈바꿈하는 장소특정적인 프로젝트로서, 기존의 갤러리 공간 내에 육중한 전신주들을 설치하는 작업으로 이루어진다.

야심찬 조각적 설치와 비디오 작업들을 통해 국제적으로 잘 알려져 있는 카르발료사의 작업은 건축적 공간의 변형을 통해 관객으로 하여금 미묘한 혼돈을 경험하게 하는 경향을 보여준다. 이를 통해 그는 우리의 도시적 풍경에 내재하는 일상적인 물질성을 재규정 함으로써 상실과 평온이라는 시적 감정을 동시에 환기시킨다. 그가 사용하는 재료들은 대규모의 오브제로부터 금방 사용되고 없어질 듯한 직물에 이르기까지 다양하지만, 그의 작업이 지속적으로 탐구해온 것은 공간에 대한 재해석과 고요한 아름다움의 순간을 창조해내는 일에 대한 열정이다.

카르발료사는 이번 국제갤러리의 첫 개인전을 위해 그의 대표적인 조각적 설치 작품인, <대기실>이라는 의미의 <살라 드 에스페라(Sala de Espera)>를 선보인다. 잊기 힘들만큼 인상적인 이 작품은 전시장을 극적으로 가로지르며 실내공간과 교차하는 12개의 전장(全長)으로 이루어진 나무기둥들로 구성되어 있다. 본래 가로등 기둥으로 사용되었던 8-12 미터 길이의 이 오브제들은 형용할 수 없는 가벼움과 동시에 죽음의 무게에 대한 불길한 감정을 떠올린다. 실로 그것은 카르발료사의 주요한 작품주제인 건물이 지닌 심리적 측면과 그곳에 주거하는 인간 사이의 상호작용이다. 현대 디자인의 어휘들, 그리고 공간을 공공영역으로 변형시키는 의례들로부터 영감을 이끌어내어 온 이 작가의 설치작업들은 야심적일 뿐 아니라 손쉬운 설명을 거부한다. 게다가 그의 재료에 대한 선택 역시 의미의 고저(高低)를 가지고 유희하는데, 예컨대 가로등 기둥과 같은 일상적 사물들을 급진적으로 재해석함으로써 운동과 감성에 대한 강력한 기표(記表)로 변환시킨다.

<Sala de Espera>는 오스카 니마이어가 디자인한 상파울로 현대미술관에서 처음으로 설치되었으며, 이번 전시에서도 설치공간과 긴밀하게 연결되었다. 국제갤러리는 이 획기적인 작품을 K3에 선보이게 된 것을 커다란 기쁨으로 생각하는 바이다.

칼리토 카르발료사(Carlito Carvalhosa) 1961년 브라질 상파울루에서 태어났다. 그는 1984년 상파울루 대학의 건축 및 도시학과에서 건축학위를 받았다. 카르발료사는 국제적인 전시 및 비엔날레 등에 참여한바 있다. 전시기관으로는 상파울루 국제비엔날레, 하바나 비엔날레, 브라질 세쿨로 XX 비엔날레, 메르코술 비엔날레와 프랑스 보르도 CAPC에서 열린 <코트아코트 브라질 컨템포러리 아트 전> 등이 있다. 또한 그는 뉴욕 현대미술관, 리우데자네이루 현대미술관, 상파울루 현대미술관, 리우데자이네루 제국궁전, 라쿠엘 아르노 아트센터와 갤러리아 밀란 등에서 열린 다수의 전시에 참여했다. 그의 설치작품 <살라 드 에스페라>는 상파울루 현대미술관 별관의 개관기념 작품으로 선정된 바 있다.
