Kukje Gallery is pleased to announce MeeNa Park’s solo exhibition Grey & 12. This will be Park’s second solo exhibition at Kukje Gallery following her previous show in 2010. MeeNa Park has established her practice around color and popular iconography through a systematic examination how both are classified in collections and catalogues. In this exhibition the artist presents new color study drawings in addition to a series of new oil paintings.

As extensions of the artist’s series of drawings that begun in 1998, her new color study drawings use the pages collected from children’s “coloring” books to each a regular cross hatching pattern applied. Pondering the relationship between subject, form and chroma, these exquisite color studies focus primarily on the black-grey spectrum and twelve other basic colors. In her new abstract oil paintings, Park is moving away from acrylic by using commercially manufactured oil paint and the 22 different pre-made canvas formats designated for portrait use. Working without preparatory drawings, the artist seeks a form of pure art in a set space through spontaneous brushstrokes. The artist’s study of primary colors continues in her 12 colors drawings and here, she comments on the physicality of readymade-colors through the act of laying on colors straight from the tube onto the canvas.

MeeNa Park’s continued interest in the dynamic that exists between the commercialization, circulation and consumption of color and iconography is based on both the mass-production that became possible through industrialization and image-color that has expanded its purview to accommodate the ever expanding consumer demand. Through the artist’s unique combination of forms and interest in aesthetic systems, Grey & 12 reveals the autonomy of paint, pencil and colored pencils, and canvases that can be easily and equally purchased by anyone through standardization process of mass-produced objects.

Based in Seoul, Korea, MeeNa Park(b.1973) studied painting at Rhode Island School of Design, Providence (BFA) and Hunter College, New York (MFA). She has had solo shows at Doosan Gallery, New York (2012), Gallery em, Seoul (2011) and Kukje Gallery, Seoul (2010). She also participated in group exhibitions at Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art (2013, 2010), Culture Station Seoul 284 (2012, 2011), Gwangju Design Biennale (2011), Plateau, Samsung Museum of Art (2011) and Atelier Hermès (2009). Her works are in the permanent collections of many renowned museums and collections including Daelim Museum, Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art, Ilmin Museum of Art and Deutsche Bank in Hong Kong.

국제갤러리는 박미나 작가의 개인전 <Grey & 12>를 개최한다. 이번 전시는 2010년 이후 국제갤러리에서 열리는 두 번째 개인전으로, 색과 도상에 대한 조사, 채집 및 계열화를 통해 체계적인 작품 세계를 구축해온 박미나 작가의 색칠 공부 드로잉과 일련의 유화 신작을 선보인다.

1998년부터 진행되어 온 색칠 공부 드로잉의 이번 신작은 해, 달, 별을 소재로 수집된 학습용 색칠 공부의 낱장에 12색 세트 색연필이나 여러 회사에서 양산된 연필로 규칙적인 패턴을 채워 넣은 작업이다. 주제, 형태, 그리고 색채 사이의 관계를 다루는 본 작업은 기본색으로 분류된 12색과 흑·회색이 지닌 색의 스펙트럼을 보여준다. 한편 22점의 추상 유화 작업들은 공산품 유화 물감과 22개의 규격화된 인물용 캔버스를 사용하여 기존에 아크릴 물감으로부터의 완벽한 재료적 전환을 이룬다. 또한 예비적인 밑그림의 단계를 거치지 않음으로써 주어진 회화적 틀 내에서의 자유롭고 순수한 공간 예술로써의 회화를 모색한다. 작가의 계열화된 기본색에 대한 연구는 12색 유화 연작으로 확장되는데, 여기서 작가는 생산된 원상태의 물감 그대로를 캔버스에 입힘으로써 레디메이드-색의 물성에 대해 이야기한다.

색과 도상의 제품화, 유통, 소비되는 방식에 대한 작가의 지속적인 관심은 산업화로 인한 대량 생산과 다층화된 소비자에 의해 확장된 이미지와 색의 영역에 근간을 두고 있다. <Grey & 12> 전시는 표준화 과정을 거쳐 누구나 균등한 기회로 손쉽게 구입할 수 있는 물감·색/연필·캔버스의 자율성을 드러내는 작가만의 형태와 규칙의 조합을 보여준다.

박미나(b.1973)는 미국 로드 아일랜드 미술대학교와 헌터 대학교 대학원에서 회화를 전공하였다. 현재 서울을 기반으로 활발한 활동을 지속하고 있는 작가는 뉴욕 두산갤러리(2012), 갤러리 엠(2011), 국제갤러리(2010) 등에서 개인전을 가졌고, 경기도미술관(2013, 2010), 문화역서울 284(2012, 2011) 광주 디자인비엔날레(2011), 삼성미술관 플라토(2011), 아뜰리에 에르메스(2009) 등의 그룹전에 참여하였다. 현재 그의 작품은 대림미술관, 삼성미술관 리움, 일민미술관, 홍콩 도이치뱅크 등에 소장되어 있다.
