Kukje Gallery is very pleased to announce its first exhibition with Ugo Rondinone. Rondinone has garnered international attention for his poetic, evocative work across a wide range of styles and media. Often working on multiple ongoing series over many years, the artist is primarily interested in conducting personal investigations of the way materials possess and dispense energy. Gaining prominence in the 1990s, Rondinone’s work was heralded both for its preternatural use of material and its open-ended, emotional content. His confident and incisive voice allows viewers to enter the work without bias, as if seeing these things for the first time.

For his show at Kukje Gallery, Rondinone presents a series of five of his bluestone sculptures—monolithic sculptures consisting of bluestones that were cut and stacked to form raw but surprisingly emotive human effigies. Retaining the marks of the sculptural and quarrying process, these raw forms are titled the nosy, the anomalous, the observant, the inquisitive, and the dutiful. The stone figures arranged throughout the gallery bear silent but poignant witness to the natural eddies of time, creating an ambiguous yet charged tableaux.

Rondinone’s practice occupies a very special place in contemporary art. His fluency in both conceptual idioms and material inventiveness allows him to fluidly traverse multiple media—sculpture, photography, installation, and painting. His ability to use both humor and pathos, together with popular cultural iconography like clowns and rainbows, makes his work not only critically important, but also fun and socially engaging; a combination that further differentiates this visionary artist’s oeuvre from that of his contemporaries. Indeed, Rondinone approaches his individual work as being connected to a total art statement, and as such, each exhibition functions like a poignant chapter or stanza in a poem. A concise and incisive introduction, this exhibition is a perfectly crafted presentation of one of today’s most important artists.

Ugo Rondinone was born in Brunnen, Switzerland in 1964, and currently lives and works in New York City. He has had solo exhibitions at Musée National d'Art Moderne, Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris (2003); Whitechapel Art Gallery, London (2006); Creative Time: Art on the Plaza, Battery Park, New York (2007); New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York (2007); Hayward Gallery, London (2008); amongst many others. Rondinone represented Switzerland, along with Urs Fischer, in the 52^nd Venice Biennale (2007). His recent major exhibitions include a presentation of earth installations and body wax sculptures at M-Museum, Leuven (2013); monolithic bluestone sculptures commissioned by the Public Art Fund for the Rockefeller Plaza, New York (2013); and colorful wall paintings and clowns at the Rockbund Art Museum, Shanghai (2014). Rondinone’s work is featured in major museum collections, including Museum of Modern Art, New York; Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; and Dallas Museum of Art.

국제갤러리는 하반기 첫 전시로 탁월한 조형 감각과 심오한 작품 철학으로 주목 받아온 스위스 출신의 세계적 작가인 우고 론디노네의 개인전을 개최한다. 론디노네는 폭넓은 영역을 넘나드는 다양한 형식과 매체를 사용하는 시적이고 영감 어린 작품들을 선보이며 국제적으로 주목 받아왔다. 다년간에 걸쳐 여러 작품 연작을 진행하는 작가는 재료들이 에너지를 포획하거나 방출하는 방식에 대한 개인적 연구를 수행해왔다. 1990년대부터 론디노네의 작품은 초자연적 방식의 재료 활용과 열린 결말의 감성적인 내용으로 특히 주목 받아왔다. 론디노네는 사물에 대한 명민한 관찰을 통해 익숙한 주제와 재료를 새로운 방식으로 인식하게 하고, 관객들로 하여금 어떠한 편견도 끼어들지 않는 시각으로 작품과 조우하게 한다.

국제갤러리에서의 전시를 위해 론디노네는 5개로 이루어진 그의 청석 조각 연작을 선보인다. 이 거석 조각들은 거칠게 잘라서 쌓아놓은 청석들로써 정제되지 않은 형태지만 놀라울 만큼 감성적인 인간의 초상을 보여준다. 깨고 조각한 거친 작업의 흔적들로 이루어진 이 고요한 형상들의 제목은 국문으로 의역하면 ‘참견쟁이’, ‘변태’, ‘관찰자’, ‘호기심쟁이’, 그리고 ‘순종자’이다. 갤러리에 늘어선 이 돌의 초상들은 시간의 자연적인 소용돌이를 조용하지만 신랄하게 목격하는 일을 견뎌낸, 모호하지만 감동적인 예술작품이다.

론디노네의 작업은 현대미술사에서 중요한 지점을 차지한다. 작가는 그의 작품이 지닌 개념적 사유와 독창적인 표현 방식을 토대로 조각, 사진, 설치, 회화에 이르는 다양한 영역의 미디어를 자유롭게 넘나든다. 론디노네는 해학적 유머와 연민, 광대와 무지개를 비롯한 대중문화의 표상들을 능수능란하게 작품에 희석시킴으로써 현실에 대한 비판적 주장을 제기하는 동시에 관념적 유희들을 통해 관객과의 소통을 시도한다. 이러한 복합적 개념은 다른 현대 작가들로부터 론디노네를 차별화 시키는 중요한 요소로 작용한다. 론디노네는 각각의 작품을 하나의 예술적 담화를 이루는 구성요소로 접근하고, 비슷한 맥락으로 각각의 전시들은 하나의 시를 구성하는 절이나 장으로 해석될 수 있다. 이번 국제갤러리에서의 전시는 오늘날 현대미술을 대표하는 작가 중 하나인 론디노네의 완벽하게 짜여진 개념적 탐색을 엿볼 수 있는 중요한 기회가 될 것이다.

우고 론디노네는 1964년 스위스 브루넨에서 태어났으며, 현재는 뉴욕에 거주하며 작업 중이다. 주요 개인전은 파리 조르주 퐁피두센터 국립현대미술관(2003), 런던 화이트채플 갤러리(2006), 뉴욕 배터리 공원(2007), 뉴욕 뉴뮤지엄(2007), 런던 헤이워드갤러리(2008) 등에서 개최된 바 있다. 론디노네는 제52회 베니스비엔날레(2007)에서 우르스 피셔(Urs Fischer)와 함께 스위스관을 대표하는 작가로 선정되기도 하였다. 최근 전시로는 루벤 M미술관에서 있었던 흙을 이용한 설치작업과 신체 밀랍 모형물들의 전시(2013), 뉴욕 록펠러센터에서 개최되었던 거대한 돌 조각들의 전시(2013), 상해 록번드미술관 열린 총천연색 벽화와 어릿광대들에 관한 전시(2014) 등이 있다. 현재 그의 작품은 뉴욕현대미술관, 보스톤 현대미술관, 샌프란시스코 현대미술관, 미니애폴리스 워커아트센터, 달라스미술관 등 세계 주요 미술관들에 소장되어 있다.
