국제갤러리의 양혜규 작가는 쿠바 태생의 미국 작가 펠릭스 곤잘레스 토레스(1957-1996)와함께 영국 브리스톨에 위치한 아놀피니 미술관에서 2인전을 개최한다. 두 작가의 작업을 일종의 대화상태에 두는 본 전시는 시적이면서도 정치적인 측면이 공존하는 두 작가의 개념적이고도 미학적인 작업 방식에 새로운 정치, 사회적, 미술적 맥락을 부여하고자 한다.

전시제목 ?방파제?는 마르그리트 뒤라스의 동명 소설(국내에는 ?태평양의 방파제?로 번역본이 소개되었다.)이기도 하다. ?방파제?전은 두 작가의 친연성과 대조점에 주목하여 친밀함과 행동주의, 사적인 것과 공적인 것, 내부와 외부, 장소와 인물 등 현대 사회의 주요한 쟁점을 다양한 문화적 맥락에서 접근하고자 한다.

해당 전시관련 양혜규의 작품들은 초기작을 포함하여 지난 10년 간의 주요작품으로 구성되지만, 작가의 잘 알려진 대표작품 광원 조각과 블라인드 설치 등이 배제되고 근래 보기 어려웠던 작가의 또 다른 작품 들인 그리고 <생 브누아 가 5번지5, Rue Saint-Benoît>, <증서Certificates> 연작, <신용양호자들Trustworthies> 연작 그리고 가는 실을 설치하여 공간을 막아내는 실 설치작, 염료가 묻은 실을 벽에 튕겨 그리는 일종의 벽화를 비롯하여 20여점의 작품들이 전시될 예정이다.

본 전시는 영국 예술위원회, 브리스톨 시 문화재단의 후원으로 개최되며, 전시를 맞이하여 기획되는 소책자에는 작가 리엄 길릭의 텍스트가 함께 선보일 예정이다.



아놀피니(Arnolfini) 소개
전 영국 테이트 미술관 관장 니콜라스 세로타 경Sir Nicholas Serota이 유럽의 가장 진보적인 예술 기관중 하나로 손꼽은 바 있는 아놀피니는 브리스톨 항에 위치한 창고 건물을 개조하여 미술, 무용, 영화, 음악을 아우르는 실험적이고 진취적인 작가들의 전시 및 이벤트, 교육 프로그램 등을 개최해왔다. 2011년 50주년을 맞이하여 코지마 폰 보닌 Cosima von Bonin 개인전으로 시작하는 보다 실험적인 현대미술가들의 대형 전시를 기획하고 있다.

The two-person exhibition The Sea Wall will facilitate a conversation between the work of Haegue Yang and Felix Gonzalez-Torres. Operating though a number of conceptual and aesthetic approaches, this dialogue will look to activate their respective practices anew, drawing on the co-existence of the poetical and political aspects in their work, contextualizing them in a contemporary socio-political, as well as artistic discourse.

The Sea Wall will present the affinities and contrasts in their respective practices, examining their approaches to such notions as: intimacy and activism, private and public, inside and outside, as well as place and people, relevant for contemporary society in different cultural contexts. Of particular significance here will be the notion of ‘community’  –  a fragile, invisible or temporary community and a significant subject in the work of these artists.

The exhibition has been titled after the novel The Sea Wall by writer Marguerite Duras, which depicts her life as a child growing up in colonial-era French Indochina during the 1930s, after the death of her father. Her mother is conned into buying a plot of land to live from, which is flooded by the sea every year, ruining the harvest. It is a tale of a struggling immigrant family, with the mother treated with disdain by the state authorities for being a foreign woman.

Arnolfini is one of Europe’s leading centres for the contemporary arts, presenting innovative, experimental work in the visual arts, performance, dance, film, music and events, accompanied by a programme of educational activities. The location is at the heart of Bristol’s harbourside.
