빌 비올라의 대형 설치 작품 <마리아 (Mary)>가 2016년 9월 8일부터 런던 세일트폴 대성당 북쪽 성가대통로에 영구 설치 된다. 2014년에 영구 설치 되었던 <순교자 (흙, 공기, 불, 물)>와 짝을 이루는 <마리아>는 성경적 형상에 현대적 기술을 혼합하여 플라스마 화면으로 된 세폭화로 구성된다. 빌 비올라는 성당에 설치된 두 작품 모두 인간의 생과 죽음, 안락과 고통과 같은 심오한 미스터리를 주제로 미학적이면서 실용적인 기능을 갖추었다.  

Bill Viola’s large-scale installation piece Mary is now part of the permanent collection in St. Paul’s Cathedral, London since September 8, 2016. A partner piece, Martyrs (Earth, Air, Fire, Water), had already joined the permanent collection in 2014. Mary is a triptych of plasma screens, combining biblical imagery with modern technology. Both art works by Bill Viola in St. Paul’s Cathedral have aesthetic and practical functions, as they explore profound mysteries such as life and death or peace and pain.
