Koo Bohnchang is the subject of a solo exhibition titled Incognito, on view at The Museum of Photography, Seoul, through January 11, 2020. Throughout the course of his career, Koo's constant investigation into the possibilities of photography has played a pivotal role in establishing the medium as a major genre of contemporary art in Korea. Since the 1980s, Koo has photographed the urban landscape through the lens of his personal experiences including feelings of alienation in the city, concerns about his identity, and vestiges of a rapidly disappearing past. In this exhibition, a selection of Koo’s major works from the 1980s to the present are on view.
Deeply rooted in the artist’s personal identity, Koo’s photographs capture his experiences of the everyday scenery and the trivial incidents that occur in the city. The photographs depict dilapidated spaces, lonely yet ambiguous landscapes, the breathless chaos of the city, and tokens of bygone memories of what the city used to be. The artist observes quietly from afar and represents a fragmentary image of the time and traces that might disappear or have already, and these images construct Koo’s latent identity and the world that he perceives. A catalogue, which includes 55 color and black-and-white photographs and an essay by the Spanish independent curator Alejandro Castellote, has been published for the occasion of this exhibition.
