The internationally acclaimed contemporary artist Anish Kapoor is the subject of a solo exhibition titled Anish Kapoor at Houghton Hall, which opened on July 12, 2020, at Houghton Hall located in Norfolk, in the east of England. Built by Sir Robert Walpole, Great Britain’s first Prime Minister in around 1722, Houghton Hall is one of the country’s finest examples of Palladian architecture. Currently owned by the Cholmondeley family, the venue has displayed works by internationally acclaimed artists including Richard Long, Damien Hirst, and Henry Moore, since opening to the public in 1976. Kapoor, known for his practice that engages the physicality of materials and non-linear forms in order to explore concepts of the body, existence, and spirituality, showcases his unique artistic vocabulary and establishes an aesthetic dialogue with the classical architecture of the house and the idyllic beauty of the grounds

Curated by Mario Codognato, director of the Anish Kapoor Foundation, the exhibition will present 24 sculptures as well as a selection of drawings representative of the artist’s ground-breaking body of work created over the past four decades. Installed on the grounds is Kapoor’s iconic Sky Mirror (2018), a 5-meter diameter mirror created with stainless steel reflecting the movements of the sky. Also installed outdoors are a number of carved marble sculptures created from 2001 to 2004 featuring geometrical yet organic forms, including Grace (2004) and Eight Eight (2004). Shown throughout the galleries inside the house is a series of colored concave mirrors which come into harmony with the classical décor to create an enchanting and elegant atmosphere. The exhibition, which broadens the psychological and physical perceptions of visitors with artworks that seamlessly blend in and come into continuous dialogue and engagement with Houghton’s history, runs through November 1, 2020.
