Kukje Gallery Announces the Representation of Korakrit Arunanondchai
Kukje Gallery is pleased to announce the representation of Korakrit Arunanondchai. A painter, filmmaker, and most importantly storyteller, Arunanondchai weaves together enchanting webs of personal narratives and historical constructs. His kaleidoscopic practice works to attest to Arunanondchai’s faith in the power of storytelling, providing the artist’s unique language to a variety of subjects that mostly stem from his associations with his family, friends, and the local settings of production.
Born in Bangkok and working between Bangkok and New York, the artist currently works in his homeland. His work being closely knitted with his personal accounts, cultural transplantation and hybridity serve as significant foundations of his grammar. His distinct interest in ghosts and spirituality, founded upon his Buddhist beliefs, are superimposed with individual expositions of the artist’s versatile experience of this world.
Currently on view at the 13th Gwangju Biennale is Arunanondchai’s most recent film Songs for Dying (2021). Installed at the Horanggasy Artpolygon in Yangnim, a significant site of the West’s missionary work in Korea since the early 20th century, the new video draws on past and present histories of two countries—Korea’s Jeju Uprising of 1948 and Thailand’s democratization movement, looking into rituals of collective grief and their operations of healing and memorialization.
About the Artist
Born in Bangkok, Thailand, in 1986, Korakrit Arunanondchai moved to the United States in 2005 to study art. He received his B.A. from Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) in 2009, and M.A. from Columbia University in 2012. Arunanondchai has held numerous solo exhibitions in major institutions around the world, including the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art, Porto (2020), Secession, Vienna (2019), S.M.A.K., Ghent (2016), Ullens Center for Contemporary Art, Beijing (2015), Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2015), and MoMA PS1, New York (2014). He has also participated in global biennales including the 16th Istanbul Biennial (2019), the Whitney Biennial (2019), the 58th Venice Biennale (2019), and the 20th Sydney Biennale (2016). His works are included in the permanent collections of Tate Modern, London; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Fondation Louis Vuitton, Paris; Office of Contemporary Art and Culture (OCAC) Ministry of Culture, Bangkok; Sifang Art Museum, Nanjing. He lives and works between New York and Bangkok.

국제갤러리는 태국의 현대미술가 코라크릿 아룬나논차이(Korakrit Arunanondchai)와 공식 전속계약을 체결했다. 회화, 영상, 퍼포먼스 작가이자, 무엇보다 탁월한 이야기꾼인 아룬나논차이는 개인적 서사와 역사적 산물을 한데 엮어 매혹적인 이야기를 만들어낸다. 다양한 매체를 오가는 다채로운 작업방식은 스토리텔링의 중요성에 대한 그의 신념을 방증하며 주로 자신의 가족, 동료, 친구, 프로덕션 환경과의 관계로부터 비롯되는 이야기들에 작가만의 고유한 언어를 제공한다.
방콕에서 태어나 방콕과 뉴욕을 오가며 활동하던 작가는 현재는 태국에서 거주하며 작업하고 있다. 자신의 개인적 경험들에 긴밀히 빗대 작업하는 만큼 문화 이식 및 교배가 아룬나논차이 시각문법의 주요 토대로 기능한다. 불교신자로서 발현되는 정신성과 혼(魂)에 대한 관심은 작가가 이 세상을 경험해 나가는 과정에서 마주하는 개별 사건들과 꾸준히 교차편집 되며 발전한다.
한편, 현재 광주비엔날레에서는 아룬나논차이의 신작 영상인 <Songs for Dying>(2021)을 만나볼 수 있다. 식민지 근대가 도래하기 전 개신교 선교자들의 주요 활동 거점이었던 ‘서양촌’으로서 광주의 다층적 역사를 보여주는 양림동의 호랑가시나무 아트폴리곤에 설치되어 있는 본 영상은 제주 4.3 사건과 태국 민주화 운동을 소환하며, 집단적 애도의 의식 절차와 그 치유 및 추모 방식을 살펴본다.
