Ugo Rondinone is the subject of the solo exhibition when the sun goes down and the moon comes up, on view from January 26 through June 18, 2023, at the Museum of Art and History, Geneva, Switzerland. For its third annual Open Invitation exhibition, the MAH has invited the Swiss contemporary artist to take over its building in order to orchestrate a dialogue between his own body of work and pieces from the museum’s collection, including paintings by renowned Swiss artists Ferdinand Hodler and Félix Vallotton.
In this extensive show, Rondinone exquisitely unfolds a unique, meditative narrative across the museum. Embodying the artist's contemplations on nature, his works weave a web of unexpected connections and create subtle echoes through different time-spaces. The exhibition is a meditation on the elemental forces of the human psyche, the dynamics between Eros and Thanatos, and the latent presence of Romanticism in our relationship with the world.
Installed in the entrance hall, the first of a total of 13 exhibition rooms, is the sun, a massive circular sculpture made of bronze cast branches. Acting as a symbolic gateway to the circular trajectory throughout the museum galleries, the sculpture invites the viewers to go to either right or left, exploring the principle of symmetry, which consists the conceptual bedrock of the exhibition. Showcased in the tenth room is the moon, the inverse to the sun; the two contrasting sculptures punctuate the visitor’s experience and produce a mirror effect, playing on the ideas of symmetry and connection.
Also presented in the show are the horizons, a series of glass sculptures that depict silhouettes of horses, and contemplative dancers from Rondinone’s iconic nudes series, made of wax and soil. Scattered throughout the different galleries, Rondinone’s body of work forms a subtle dialogue with works from the museum's collection; the glass horses respond to Hodler’s paintings of Lake Geneva, as do the nude figures to Vallotton’s landscapes.
The focal point of Rondinone’s practice is not so much the object itself as the relationship it forms with its immediate environment: the room, other works, and the body and mind of the viewer. The audiences, who actively engage with each work as they navigate through the nonlinear trajectory, are no longer passive observers but constitute a principal element of a unique aesthetic experience.

우고 론디노네, 제네바 미술·역사 박물관에서 개인전 《when the sun goes down and the moon comes up》 개최
스위스의 현대미술가 우고 론디노네(Ugo Rondinone)의 개인전 《when the sun goes down and the moon comes up》이 1월 26일부터 6월 18일까지 제네바 미술·역사 박물관(Musée d'Art et d'Histoire)에서 개최된다. 이번 전시는 박물관에서 매년 한 명의 작가를 초청해 여는 대표적인 연례 행사로, 올해는 우고 론디노네가 직접 기획을 도맡아 자신의 대표작 및 신작을 박물관 소장품과 함께 조화롭게 배치해 선보인다. 소장품에는 스위스의 대표적인 화가 페르디난드 호들러(Ferdinand Hodler)와 펠릭스 발로통(Félix Vallotton)의 회화 등이 포함된다.
론디노네는 이번 기획을 통해 박물관 전체에 걸쳐 일관된 명상적 서사를 풀어놓는다. 시간, 자연 등의 주제를 중심으로 시공간을 초월하는 작품들이 조화롭게 관계를 맺는다. 모든 요소 하나하나가 서로 조응하는 이 전시장 속에서 그는 인간 마음의 자연적인 힘, 에로스(Eros)와 타나토스(Thanatos)로 대표되는 양극단의 균형과 어우러짐, 우리와 세계의 관계 속에 내재된 낭만주의적인 요소들에 대한 담론을 이끌어낸다.
전시장은 크게 13개의 방으로 나뉜다. 전시의 관문인 첫 번째 방에는 나뭇가지를 청동으로 캐스팅 후 도금 처리한 〈the sun〉이 자리한다. 관람객은 이 방을 기점으로 왼편 혹은 오른편 중 하나의 방향을 선택해 관람할 수 있다. 이러한 유동적인 관람 방식은 전시의 근간이 되는 균형의 원리와도 맞닿아 있다. 관람 동선을 따라가다 보면 만나게 되는 10번째 방에는 〈the sun〉과 균형을 이루는 〈the moon〉이 놓여 있다. 전시를 관통하는 두 작품은 대칭을 이루며 전시장에서의 경험을 균형과 연결이라는 일관된 주제의식으로 응집한다.
이 외에도 말의 실루엣을 유리 조각으로 구현한 〈the horizons〉, 명상적인 포즈를 취한 무용수의 몸을 밀랍과 흙으로 묘사한 ‘Nudes‘ 조각 연작 등이 전시된다. 이 현대적인 작품들 또한 박물관의 소장품과 대응 관계를 갖는다. 론디노네의 유리 말들은 제네바 강을 묘사한 호들러의 작품과, 누드 조각들은 발로통의 풍경화와 어우러진다.
