Jean-Michel Othoniel Receives the Légion d'Honneur, France's Highest Award
Contemporary artist Jean-Michel Othoniel received the Légion d'honneur, France's highest award. French President Emmanuel Macron presented him with the award during a ceremony held at the Palais de l'Élysée in Paris on October 17th, 2023.
The Légion d'honneur, a prestigious order of merit bestowed by the French government, recognizes individuals of all nationalities who have made significant contributions across the domains of politics, culture, science, the military, and beyond. It was established in 1802 under Napoleon Bonaparte's rule with the original purpose of acknowledging the valor of soldiers displaying remarkable service. The Légion d'honneur is divided into five degrees of distinction: Grand-Croix, Grand Officier, Commandeur, Officier, and Chevalier. The fifth class, Chevalier, the honor conferred upon Othoniel, marks a significant milestone denoting nationwide acknowledgment of an individual's achievements and requires a minimum of twenty years of professional activities within their respective domains. Chevaliers can advance to higher ranks should they continue to demonstrate exceptional distinction following a specific period with the honor.
Notable cultural and artistic luminaries previously honored with the Légion d'honneur include Lee Ufan, the first Korean artist to receive this distinction in 2007, alongside renowned names like Édouard Manet, Claude Debussy, Richard Strauss, Le Corbusier, Bob Dylan, and Tadao Ando.
For over three decades, Jean-Michel Othoniel has held a cherished place as one of France's most beloved contemporary artists and has adorned public spaces throughout the country with his works, fueled by his exploration of universal human themes. In 2000, he received his first public commission to transform the Parisian subway station Palais-Royal-Musée du Louvre in celebration of its 100th anniversary, for which he installed Le Kiosque des Noctambules, made of Murano glass and aluminum. In 2015, the Palace of Versailles welcomed the artist’s Les Belles Danses as the first permanent installation inside its gardens, making him an influential contemporary artist. In 2019, Othoniel was commissioned to create La Rose du Louvre by the Louvre Museum, and the original paintings remain permanently in the collection and in situ. In June 2023, his specially commissioned work Le Pont aux Boules d’Or was installed in the historical Domaine de Méréville in Essonne, France, followed by the unveiling of a sprawling floor installation enveloping a fountain in a park in Sète, France.
Othoniel has actively engaged with Korean audiences through a series of solo and group exhibitions. In March 2023, the artist unveiled a new series of glass brick works in his solo exhibition Wonder Blocks at Kukje Gallery’s Hanok. Notably, in June 2022, his solo exhibition Jean-Michel Othoniel: Treasure Gardens at the Seoul Museum of Art and Deoksugung Palace Garden attracted an impressive audience of approximately 150,000 visitors, solidifying his presence among the Korean public.
Sculptures by the artist, including Gold Lotus, Gold Rose, and Collier Or, are now on display in Heewon, the traditional garden of the Hoam Museum of Art in Yongin, Korea. Meanwhile, The Flowers of Hypnosis, his solo exhibition at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, is set to continue until October 22, 2023.

지난 30여 년간 인류 보편적 주제에 대한 관심을 바탕으로 프랑스 전역의 공공장소에 작품을 선보여온 장-미셸 오토니엘은 프랑스 대중이 가장 사랑하는 현대미술가 중 한 명이기도 하다. 2000년에는 파리 지하철 개통 100주년을 기념하여 팔레 루아얄-루브르 박물관(Palais-Royal - Musée du Louvre)역에 무라노 유리와 알루미늄으로 지하철 입구를 제작한 작업 〈야행자들의 키오스크(Le Kiosque des Noctambules)〉를 통해 국제적으로 주목받았고, 2015년에는 베르사유 궁전의 정원에 〈아름다운 춤(Les Belles Danses)〉를 영구 설치하여 동시대의 영향력 있는 작가로 이름을 올렸다. 2019년에는 루브르 박물관의 초청을 받아 작업한 작품 〈루브르의 장미(La Rose du Louvre)〉가 현대미술가의 작업으로는 이례적으로 박물관에 영구 소장되어 화제를 모은 바 있다. 이어 올해 6월에는 프랑스 에손의 유서 깊은 정원 도멘 드 메레빌(Domaine de Méréville)의 다리를 커미션 작업 〈Le Pont aux Boules d'Or〉로 장식하였고, 연달아 프랑스 남부 지방 세트(Sète) 공원에도 거대한 분수를 아우르는 바닥 설치를 공개하며 큰 주목을 받았다.
오토니엘은 한국에서도 꾸준한 개인전과 단체전 참여를 통해 국내 관객과의 교감을 긴밀히 지속해왔다. 올해 3월 국제갤러리 한옥에서 열린 개인전 《Wonder Blocks》에서 동명의 유리벽돌 작품 시리즈를 최초로 공개했고, 지난 2022년 서울시립미술관과 덕수궁 정원에 걸쳐 개최된 개인전 《정원과 정원》은 약 15만 명에 이르는 관객을 동원하여 큰 화제를 모은 바 있다. 한편 현재 용인 호암미술관의 전통정원 '희원'의 연못에서는 작가의 〈황금 연꽃〉, 〈황금 장미〉, 〈황금 목걸이〉 연작이 전시되고 있으며, 뉴욕 브루클린 식물원에서 선보이는 개인전 《The Flowers of Hypnosis》는 오는 10월 22일까지 이어진다.
